SGMNT is a segmented speaker designed to fulfil all audio system requirements; portable speaker, sound bar, surround sound and provide 360-degree sound as well as stereo surround on the move and at home.
The company, 124 Audio, has been founded to address a critical issue within the consumer electronics sector, e-waste. The idea is to build a company from the ground up, based on sustainable principles. Current consumer electronics companies are some of the most environmentally irresponsible in today's economy. With outdated supply chains and the use of unsustainable materials, manufacturing methodologies and design practices, these companies can’t quickly switch to sustainable alternatives, or pivot to a more environmentally responsible way of operating. 124 aims to start over. Everything we do is inspired by and based on the following principles; design for repairability, design for disassembly, design for a circular economy, less but better.
124 will be a sustainably focused, design-led and agile consumer electronics company with two main goals; to produce high-quality, sustainable products that people become attached to and to combat the problem of e-waste.
The product presented is SGMNT. SGMNT is a portable, modular speaker system designed to fulfil all of the user’s audio requirements. It splits into 4 segments and allows the user to configure the system to suit their needs and the needs of the situation. Thus, removing the need to possess several separate household audio systems. It provides the option of creating both 360 degree sound and stereo surround sound on the move and at home.
Its primary use cases include; a cinema surround sound system, office speakers, and portable speakers. The product is to be designed and built with both the end-user and the planet in mind. Its chassis and shell have been 3D printed using Sulapac 1.7 Flow ABS, creating a durable, acoustically optimised and sustainable structure. Its internal components have been designed to be easily repaired, maintained and upgraded. The system will be entirely controlled by an app, removing the need for buttons and unnecessary components.
The system can be used in wide range of scenarios, utilising a large number of configurations. While in cinema mode, the modules can be arranged into a 4.1 system, a 3.1 system or simply stacked to form a sound bar. SGMNT comes with an optional, dedicated, non-portable subwoofer, improving the bass response for a demanding scenario such as cinematic sound.
The system can also be used as a 2.0 system, arranged to the left and right of a user's monitor in an office setup. Another common use case involves two of the modules arranged in a dual sound bar configuration, which creates a near 360 degree sound with just two modules.
