SGMNT MODULAR SPEAKER
SGMNT is a segmented speaker designed to fulfil all audio system requirements; portable speaker, sound bar, surround sound and provide 360-degree sound as well as stereo surround on the move and at home.
Year: 2023
Status: Complete, Prototype

30% of all e-waste consists of audio products, most of which end up in dumping grounds like Agbogbloshie, Ghana.
Research Insights
Over 50% of surveyed participants owned four or more speaker systems, revealing a need for a versatile, multifunctional solution. 27% disposed of unused speakers as waste, while 44% stored broken devices, indicating poor end-of-life management.

The Value Hill
Design for repairability and longevity emerge as the most cost and time effective way to combat e-waste, as illustrated by the value hill, with durability and multi-functionality identified as key factors to extend product lifespan.
Ideation
The speaker system features external modularity, allowing segments to function independently or as part of various configurations, and internal modularity, enabling easy upgrades and replacements to extend its lifespan. A no-glue assembly method and standardised components ensure repairability, while the design promotes flexibility and sustainability throughout the product lifecycle.

Design Considerations
Its primary use cases include; a cinema surround sound system, office speakers, and portable speakers. The product is to be designed and built with both the end-user and the planet in mind. Its chassis and shell have been 3D printed using Sulapac 1.7 Flow ABS, creating a durable, acoustically optimised and sustainable structure. Its internal components have been designed to be easily repaired, maintained and upgraded. The system will be entirely controlled by an app, removing the need for buttons and unnecessary components.
Strategic Impact
The modular design reduces e-waste and supports repairability. Its unique multifunctionality sets it apart in a crowded market, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. By replacing multiple speaker systems, it offers better value to users while reinforcing sustainability as a competitive advantage.
Prototype
Four SGMNTs with independent Bluetooth receivers, enable stereo and mono sound modes. Each unit housed two Dayton Audio mid-range drivers and a passive radiator.
